I found this podcast to be quote thought provoking, to the point where I went online in search of the document. Which was harder to find than I expected to be.

While I was listening to the podcast I found myself hearing a familiar rant of my own: "Men just don't get some of this stuff". As a dominant female I have spent lots of time trying to figure out how to be the dominant person in a relationship dispite how I was raised or my own initial thoughts on dominant women.

In my quest for my own answers I have found that sometimes, male dominants don't see the emotional/psychological side of the dynamic.

In this list of criteria, I saw an underlying tone of that side. Take away the literal interpretation, which is where I saw this podcast get stuck to some extent, and you are left with a half decent guide to morals and values of being dominant.

I have found that more often than not, dominant men overlook these ideals in their relationships. The focus is much more on the task. This was just another example for me of how different female domination is from male.

Even though I disagreed with most of what was being said, I enjoyed the podcast.

Thank you for putting it out there.

Kind regards,

We were the other seven guys, none of whom had any idea that any girls really were into this. Or at least i was.I think Daddy David was banging huge clusters of beach bunnies in LA or something.

This was the first episode of your show I have listened too, thank you for sharing it.

On a different matter, would it be possible to hear from the person who did the intro/Master of the person who does the intro? I'd like to ask you about a cross promotion option...

Thanks,
Dan

Oh, and I have read your respective articles on "perspectives on protocol" and you should assume in my query above that I understand the differences between modes of behavior, and Who We Are in the context of any relationship.

Wow! This gave me so much to think about. Thank you for that.

When you speak about "Daddy" being perceived as an "equal player" in the community...as "Sir" or "Master"...not as titles but as lifestyle practitioners...do you reject the idea that, moment-to-moment within every D/s relationship, we each have different roles? (for example., http://www.geocities.com/rovershand/3POD.html)

Gentlemen, if your invitation is still open, I'll be happy to have a conversation with you on another podcast. In any case, while you were uninformed or misinformed as to that particular document, I nevertheless appreciate your responses.

So much of what's talked about in this podcast rang true for me. I've asked myself the "Top or Dom" question more than once, and have had (in a similar fashion) rather fervent answers from others of "Dom!" The questioning in myself, though, has always come from this idea that I've NEVER had to be the Alpha, the big dick in the room. I've always been more interested in, as you put it, influence. A solid Dominant archetype for me, for a few years now, has been that of the old english butler. Controlling the House - and the 'masters' of the house - without anyone ever actually seeing, feeling, or acknowledging that control. I worked as a stage manager in independent theatre, here in Toronto, for about a decade. It has all the same elements of subtle, understated control. Control, without having to be the face of control.

When I was a teenager I had *no idea* men were into this for real. I had my own fantasies since I was little but thought it was just me. I was "regina nerdorum" of the dorm room (7 gaming guys and me). It never came up; I think they were just scared of women. Was I oblivious or what? Sheesh! Where were you guys???

I listened to this pod cast a little while ago as I commuted between home and work. I am curious if you have read the book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell. He actually discusses a kind of "Bad Daddy" archetype in mythology. Quite interesting reading (or listening in my case) if you ever get a chance.

My opinion is that this blog post did a disservice to Master Skip's ideas. From what I know, this was taken out of context from a presentation he did about spirituality and mastery, and is not a book. I attended this discussion at the Master and slave conference, and you cannot get the fullness of his ideas about mastery as a vocation from just those bullets in his handout. At no point in the discussion did I hear that he thinks all Masters should approach mastery as spiritual.

After reading your post, I gave the entire podcast another listen, and I saw something in my own behavior I had not noticed before. I think Ken and I were reacting, not so much to the site in front of us, but to a knee jerk reaction caused by a hundred sites and speeches we had read and heard other places. Daddy david helped us focus on what was really there in front of us, which, we noted by the end, was not nearly the atrocious horseshit that we were used to- and that we saw out of habit and expectation. Not our best, to be certain- but a behaviour to be aware of.

Thank you.

Interesting... though I will say, I heard that podcast as primarily a rant-n-bash as well.

"damaging misinformation" Hmmm... because there is a Truth other than the one espoused? I suspect their are many... my truth, your truth, his and hers with matching bath towels just to prove it.

At no time did I get the message from the “Priest in Black Leather: Mastery as a Spiritual Calling” excerpt (The Qualities of a Realized Master) that this truth, ideal, belief, *insert descriptive of choice* was attempting to promote anything other than Skip Chasey's personal philosophy... which happens to be spiritual in nature.

Whose responsibility, with the respect to the dissemination of information, is it to investigate the layers of legitimacy of any given piece or its alternatives? The reader's rather than the writer's is how I would answer that question. The fact that few individuals do that... round hole, square peg. Lemmings are the responsibility of their own dysfunction and not the author's.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, it's always nice to have what we do appreciated. PowerInPractice is a pretty free form little podcast - we talk about whatever strikes our fancy and we try and come at it pretty "real" in the sense that we haven't rehearsed. As a result the conversation sometimes rambles, or we evolve our positions on the spot as we bounce ideas off each other - but I think that is the charm.

I googled ya and checked out your homepage, pretty cool. Your podcast looks like a great resource as well. I'll drop you an email, maybe we can get you on sometime.

Thanks again!

Thanks and kudos, guys, for a fascinating discussion.

As a gay man who has long identified with the Daddy role I was especially interested to hear your take on things-- most notably, from a heterosexist filter. I must draw some similar conclusions to yours in the very different ways that the pan or straight worlds respond to the "Daddy" role versus the gay male leather world. I was also gratified to hear that qualities that I most closely associate with the Daddy role are often shared by my straight counterparts who identify as Master publicly. I had no idea that straight Daddies might be (or feel) less validated within their respective communities or be closeted for having less prestige or, as one of you put it, "the creepy factor."

At any rate, I think you did a great job in providing an intelligent and very thoughtful discussion about a topic that's near and dear to many hearts. I hope that queer perspectives will continue to be injected in these dialogues (and that these perspectives will also be shared directly by gay/lesbian/trans persons).

Respectfully,
ScottDaddy, Mr Philadelphia Leather 2008

Hi Louise,

If you use the zune software or itunes or any other way that you place music on your mp3 player you can go to the subscribe section in your menu options and put in: http://www.powerinpractice.com/feed/ as the feed. Then when any podcast comes out it will download it when you run your mp3 player software. :) Enjoy!

I was wondering how, I could download one of your podcasts, to my MP3 player. Because I would like to listen, to one that's an hourlong. So it would be better if, it would be downloaded into my MP3 player, that way I could listen to it as I worked, or do other things.

really, our intent was not to bash anybody- what we arere all struck by was the continuation of what we consider to be damaging misinformation which proliferates on the web, and had recently come across a new example.

In the end, we felt we had nothing against the guy for holding spiritual views in his BDSM; we just have a problem with spiritualism being promoted as obvious and necessary fact - kinda like teaching creationism in school. Just rubs me the wrong way.

Mika:

After July 4th, the book will be available through Lulu.com, and then shortly thereafter will be available on Barnes and Noble.com. depending on how Amazon's current legal issues sort out, it may also become available there. I'll be signing copies on July 4th at TES Fest in NJ.

There seems to be a small glitch with this episode's MP3 file and the player plugin - at least with Firefox 2.0.0.12. When using the plugin, the episode plays at double speed.

If one opens the file in another tab using the download link, the file plays back at regular speed, so it isn't a file problem, and I don't think it is a browser issue therefore.

That's pretty close, to my way of thinking... the distinctions could be made as abstract discussion- but for practical purposes, I think that's on the money

Somewhere in this presentation, Flagg made the distinction between power and authority, but concentrated mostly on contracts and describing authority. Do you see Flagg's division as being roughly equivalent to the division between dominance and ownership that Soulhuntre made in his NCEdge presentation, with power being roughly equivalent to ownership?

Wow. I am so happy to have stumbled across this. I'm so glad to be a party to these candid conversations again. I've missed it. However, I'm sure you guys remember my enjoyment of spirited debate, so I'll jump right in.

This idea of charity is what gets me. It's not charity. It's hot to be next to that kind of power. It's already obvious to the bottom-side ofthe relation whether a person can "handle" things. If a person *needs* it, its funny. You can sit there and watch their seething, then its funny to start poking around to see what makes them finally blow their stack. Any kid with a mean streak knows that trick. But to have a person - where you can *see* their seething and after poking once or twice, it becomes obvious that *this one* cannot be baited. But to see the controlled pleasure, sincere yet meticulous, exacting. Not in *need* but happy to see his girl melt and then cry.

As to the issue of worth and usefulness. This type of authority brings a variety of possibilities. While it may not be "in a Daddy" way, it can certainly be a structured environment. Think of the Von Trapps, the momentum created by this dynamic can be harnessed in invaluable ways, especially if there is a "military" feel to it. Those without children, maybe cannot experience this "ownership" feeling that is associated with absolute power. This is why this bond is undiluted and is indeed something that can evolve into something akin to training in the sense that I've come to understand your use of it. I'll always keep you, you are a part of me, you belong to me. I teach and train you, soldier you up and discipline you into the little assitant I always needed. Think of businessmen who train their sons to take over for them. Similar to the queen on the chess board. As a parent, I have a feeling of ownership over my child. This power is as absolute as I've ever experienced.

On another note, which resonates in a very real way, though it may not be the most cheerful or conventional way to feel. My grandmother was the single most influential authority figure I ever knew. And probably one of the only I can say this is because she was a Good Mommy. I am so capable and independent *because* of her, and that's probably why I can feel this way without *guilt* I was quite comforted when she passed suddenly last christmas. On a very selfish level the single thing that could occasionally win over me had been removed from the picture and I could then begin exerting myself in whole new ways, once her stature, power and influence no longer stood in my way.

I was really surprised at the views the men had on this dynbamic. To be frankly honest, I must admit that I was disappointed in how they had only scratched the surface of such an intricate involvement. However, in closing, I must take this advantage to defend my feminist comrades. The only form of feminism I've experience has intimate4d "I will not allow a gender with this level of stupidity have any authority over my uterus"

Anyway, good to see you guys still active. Word.

Hey all! Sorry for the delay - with Flagg's surgery I have been distracted.

Yes, this seems to be a problem with the file. I will be generating and posting a new version asap!

Have you heard that from anyone else?
